Wyong Group

International Women's Day March 1998.

OWN Wyong was set up in 1996, following a lunch with the Sydney Theatre Group. Our numbers have increased only marginally over the years, although the camaraderie between members has increased with the passing years.

The usual plan is a meeting on the first Monday in the month at 'Rose Cottage', the Wyong branch of the Central Coast Women's Health Centre. The meetings are always filled with lively discussions on a variety of topics - sometimes what is happening globally, sometimes what is happening in Australia or locally. Yes, they can be highly political, but never party political.

Our activities are many and varied. The third Monday in the month is given over to our social activities, which range from trips to Newcastle to visit the art gallery or library exhibitions, to joining OWN Newcastle for International Women's Day. You name it, and we have probably done it.

A highlight in 2001 was a visit to the Teapot Exhibition at Morpeth. We also thoroughly enjoyed our hike with Aboriginal students from Tranby College on a field trip around Barry Cohen's Calga Reserve. Our guides showed us the 'soap tree' and other native plants used for curing stomach ulcers and diabetes. We were able to tell the students of our knowledge of 'white' participation over decades to achieve equal rights for all and also for reconciliation.

There is so much to see and do in our area. This is one of the problems in gaining membership, as there are so many other organisations local women are able to join. However, we are sure there are no other women's organisations which have the special something that OWN surely has to its credit.
