Wagga Wagga Group
Wagga Wagga OWN was formed in 1998 with the support of our local Women's Health Centre. About 30 older women attended the inaugural meeting. Our guest speaker was the (then) deputy mayor, Kay Hull, who talked about women and ageing issues.
We believe older women face a lot of issues in today's society, particularly in rural and regional areas. These issues can include social isolation, loneliness, housing, poverty, poor health and inadequate transport. We are often invisible as we get older and are seen by many as a drag on the economy, even though many of us are supporting our families.
At our meetings on the first and third Tuesday of each month, we celebrate the positive aspects of ageing, utilise our existing talents and develop new and stimulation skills for a happier, healthier ageing.
About two years ago seven of us formed a theatre group and have regularly perform our own skits and songs to audiences on a variety of occasions including during Seniors Week and to members of Seniors Citizens, Probus and View clubs.
